I'm not sure what you're trying to do there. The italicised sentence is in the past and repeats 'were', probably to emphasise how determined they were
Your '2' recasts the sentence in the present and takes out the second verb. It's a good sentence. Can you add something to say what's illustrated there?

I googled faulty parallelism. I should have done that before I answered
I understand how it works, but it didn't strike me as something I'd necessarily do. (1) is right if you put 'quite' back in. (2) is OK, referring to the present
I suppose I can see why it's a good rule in formal writing
