Fateful day expressing a day with extrem happy, extrem sorrow

Today he is died, and this going to be a fateful day for me because I cannot forget them forever. (extreme sorrowness)

I cannot forget today forever because this is a day I got my promotion. It will be a fateful day for me forever. (extreme sorrowness)

Please correct my sentences and provide me with better versions.

As for dictionary, it seems "fateful" usually has only negative effect, so I wonder if it's correct to include it in a positive happening like promotion.
