Fat goes through

How would you phrase this please?

I was holding a chocolate croissant in a kitchen roll so I would t get butter all over my hands. The butter went through the kitchen roll and my hands were still buttery.

Kitchen rolls have perforation that allow one to tear off a piece of paper along the line. With me I always manage to tear it along the line of slits until I get to the bottom where I always seem to tear outward so I never end up with
