Farther vs. Further

Hi,

I'd like to know if the following sentence is grammatically correct.

The farther into the mountain they went, the more glowing stones they found.

I think the sentence is fine. Some people argue that 'further' should be in place of 'farther'. But I don't agree with them because 'farther' refers to physical distances whereas further denotes figurative distances.

I hope someone could clarify on this. Thank you.

I'm not trying to be assertive or anything. I just want to know the correct usage.Emotion: smile

Thank you, Anonymous. So you don't think there is a grammatical error in the sentence except for the 'further' part, right?

Further and farther mean the same thing, but I'd use "further" in that sentence. I can't give you a good reason why.
