Farewell letter

Question

Hi,

I would like to send a farewell letter to the manager and colleagues of my company which I work as a summer intern. In my company, most intern students were back to work after graduating college. I also hope to work as a perminent full time worker after I finish my Ph.D course.

Anybody can help me to write the letter? I wonder the structure of the letter. What I should include and avoid?

Any comments would be appreciated.

Here's a rough format.

Your name
Your address

Date

Your boss's name
His position
Company name
Address

Dear Mr. Boss:

First Paragraph: A sentence or paragraph that says thank you for your opportunities.

Second Paragraph: Tell the company what you have learned and accomplished. Tell how this information is helpful to you and your studies.

Third Paragraph: Tell the company how your studies, all your work experience etc. could be very helpful to the company in the future.

Fourth Paragaph: Again, tell them that you are thankful for your opportunities and that you look forward to seeing or meeting them again. You might also mention that you plan to remain in contact as your school year progresses. That leaves you an opening to call periodically to remind them of your interest.

-everything positive
-relate everything back to your professional development, studies, future aspirations and most importantly how it can help the company in the future

Things to NOT say...
-anything negative (even if there are negative things, this is not the place to voice your concerns)

What I wrote above seems somewhat repetitious. It is. Effectively, you want to "tell what you gonna tell'em, tell'em, tell'em what you told'em." The two key paragraphs are very interlinked. This is how things have helped you. And this is how you can help them.

Again, you want to make sure that the letter is glowingly positive. Your boss can show his boss how much you learned and how happy you were. Then when you come back, everyone remembers that you were the happy intern.
