Is the use of "farewell" in the following sentence correct?

"We are having a party on Friday afternoon to farewell the faculty who are leaving."

Is "to the faculty who is leaving" correct? It doesn't sound right to me (but I am not completely au fait with the lingo of academia, and even less so with it as used in AmE).

If I've understood the intention of the original sentence correctly, I would say "... say farewell to the faculty members who are leaving." However, I think that "faculty" can be used by itself to mean "faculty members", so I suppose "... to the faculty who are leaving" should work too. I don't know how common this usage is.

Yes, I really don't know what's correct to use here. Normally "are" would be correct when referring to faculties and is when it belongs to the singular form "faculty".
