Far vs far away in questions

Hi teachers,
What's the difference, if any, between these two questions? Is it optional to use 'away' in the answer, or is it odd?
a) How far from the town was the road that Peter found? Five miles.
b) How far away from the town was the road that Peter found? Five miles.

Thanks in advance
