Top answer

husband, wife, father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, sibling, offspring, ancestor, spouse, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece, cousin, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, grandfather, grandmother, grandson, granddaughter, etc. I'd say: your sister's husband's brother = your brother-in-law or, more specifically, your sister's brother-in-law or your brother-in-law's brother. your sister's husband = your brother-in-law Add "-in-law" whenever you cross a marriage line.

  • husband, wife, father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, sibling, offspring, ancestor, spouse, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece, cousin, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, grandfather, grandmother, grandson, granddaughter, etc.
  • I'd say: your sister's husband's brother = your brother-in-law or, more specifically, your sister's brother-in-law or your brother-in-law's brother.
  • your sister's husband = your brother-in-law Add "-in-law" whenever you cross a marriage line.
  • The term that comes before the "in-law" is the term that would be used if the married couple were siblings.

Okay, here's where Jane Austen and her ilk would simply say "a distant relation" or "a connection" without trying to spell it out. Also, if you're from the southern part of the U.S., you'd just say "They're my kinfolk" or "They're kin."

Cousins are classified by a common relation.

If you share a Grandparent, you are 1st cousins. Share a Great-Grandparent and you are 2nd cousins, etc.

If you are in different generations, you are X removed. Your father's 1st cousin is your 1st cousin once removed. Your Grandfather's 1st cousin is your 1st cousin twice removed.

Yes, at family reunions with my father's huge Arkansas family, they used to call me over to ask me to explain how X was related to Y - and I'd say (after thinking about it) something like "They're second cousins once removed" and then they'd laugh at me and say "No Barbara, when are you going to get it - They're KIN!" Darned if I didn't fall for it every year. (But they knew that I really was the

Your niece would be your sister or brother's daughter, therefore they would be 1st cousins.
