"family" or "families"

Dear teachers:

I read a sentence in the below:

"In terms of education, the role of schools has grown, whereas that of families has shrunk."

Can I say "In terms of education, the role of schools has grown, whereas that of families has shrunk."?

Thanks and best regards,

David Kim

Yes, you can. If they are written by a native speaker, most sentences that you read are correct, so you can say what you read.
