Vocabulary

family or families?

0Today I saw on one of our university's library buildings a slogan like this: 01font01b00Congratulations graduands! Welcome friends and family!02b02font02br

00But I think it should be families instead of family used there. Do you agree with me? Thanks.0-

00I wouldn't exactly call it a big mistake. 'Friends and family' is a commonly used and accepted phrase. I guess people see it as a short form of 'Friends and family (members)'.02br

0Hi, Clive, you mean it is a wrong phrase at lease in appearance but commonly accepted one? Are there other examples available in English? Thanks.01blockquote
