Family issues [with or without an article?]

Sentences like

"I live with my parents and brother and sister"

or while talking about fathers or mothers mentioning them time after time, do we use a definite article or are we supposed to use a possessive pronoun each time?

e.g.

"I have a father. My father is 45 years old. When I see the/my fahter repairing his car..."

and one more...

"He plays in his band the guitar" or "He plays in his band on the guitar" ? Do we use any prepositions while talking about playing an instrument? Is it always a definite article used that goes with an instrument?
