Family

Hello,

Is the word family used in the following way in English?

- The Johnson family has taken the first-floor apartment this year. The Smith family had to settle for the ground-floor apartment.

Or should I say the Johnsons and the Smiths?

If the latter, and the name of the family is foreign, would you still expect an "s" for the plural – the Rossis and the Bianchis?

Thank you for your help
H.
