My friend says this to me:

I come from a decent family, and am a good person.

Is this okay?

When you have a common subject that is being used by two sentences and is being linked together by the conjunction and, the comma is not necessary. You can measure this by doing the following:

I come from a decent family.
I am a good person.

Sorry to disagree with the others, but I firmly believe that it's fine with the comma too. I would almost always use a comma in a sentence like this.

This may be a regional thing though. I do not live in the United States.
