I've found the expression in "The Mating Season" by P.G. Wodehouse. Berty explains what is 'cross-talk act':

"...one bird says to the other bird 'Who was that lady I saw you comming down the street with?' and the second bird says to first bird 'Faith and begob, that was no lady, that was my wife'..."

You may possibly not be aware that P.G. Wodebhouse is seldom read by native speakers today (in my opinion), and I'd say no real persons speak like Bertie Wooster.
