Fairy tale or fairytale?

If I were saying 'it was like some kind of fairy tale,' would that be correct.

I assume both versions can be used, but think that the one word version would be more for something like 'a fairytale romance'.

Any comments?

Oxford has it as two words "fairy tale" and the adjective form hyphenated "a fairy-tale wedding," Merriam websters the same.
