Fade out, hospital department

Hi,

1) “When I don’t continuously refresh my memory of something I learn in class, it fades out of my brain.”

I feel like I have a veil hanging over my mind because I can’t think of any alternatives right now. Any suggestions?

2) Is there a shorter name for the department of infectious diseases or is this what you usually call it?

Thank you.

Phrases like "it fades out of my brain" and "I have a veil hanging over my mind" are too literary and metaphorical for everyday speech. People don't talk like this in the US.

Possibly, it evaporates. ( ? )

disappears and vanishes also come to mind, but those are more sudden than fade or evaporate.
