Interventizio Fade into the dark (Original post)Quote When does this expression apply? I wouldn't call that a set expression, and I don't see it as particularly appropriate to any of the situations you suggest, though of course style and context may find use for it. On the internet it seems to apply to song lyrics and elves.

In the movie "Independence Day" Bill Pullman impersonating the President of the U.S. says: "We will not go quietly into the night!" (meaning: "The aliens won't destroy us easily"). So I assumed "fade into the dark" could by analogy apply to death, extinction, disappearance etc.

Fixed phrases do not necessarily relate by analogy. Each stands on its own meaning and merit.
