"factor for" or "factor of"

Hello everyone,

I am reading an academic text and wondering whether the author has used the correct pronoun in the sentence:

"X.X's supreme position in the party may be a significant contributing factor for why it seems that there was almost no resistance to these policies."

Should it not be "a significant contributing factor of why it seems that there was no resistance"? Or "as to"? Or is "for" the correct one in this case?

Many thanks in advance!

Either "for" or "in" would be OK.
