Face-to-face hyphenated before a gerund (not a noun)?

Which one is correct?
"It has an important role in face to face selling?"
"It has an important role in face-to-face selling?"
__________

This is what I learned (tell me if I'm wrong):

Face-to-face should always be hyphenated if it's an adjective before a noun ("We had a face-to-face talk.").

But if it's not an adjective ("We have to talk face to face."), there is no set rule and it depends on the style guide whether it should be hyphenated or not.
__________

But what about gerunds? The word "selling" looks like a noun, but is actually a gerund, I think. Should face-to-face be hyphenated before a gerund?
