Face the south, face to the south, or face south?

Many English teachers and students are arguing about this:

The window of the house faces south.
The window of the house faces the south.
The window fo the house faces to the south.

Which one/ones is/are correct?

They say: face can be a vt. or vi, when it is an vi, face south/face to the south is correct, when it is a vt., face the south is correct. Whicever is correct, I'm puzzed?

So I came here for your help.

Thousands of thans.

They're all acceptable; the most usual in my neighborhood is "faces south". That's short and simple, isn't it? CJ
