I'm reading an English novel, and I came across this line: Her eyes tightened, full of grief.
What does the author trying to say?
I looked up in the dictionary and it said the definition of tighten is to close. "Someone's eyes tightened" and "someone's eyes closed" are same? Is there any difference?

Thanks for the reply. I didn't know what squint meant, and my dictionary says it's to look at something with your eyes partly closed. So, I guess to tighten one's eyes is not the same as to close one'e eyes; they're partly closed.
