Extravagant stories, translated

Hi, Does "extravagant" mean "Descriptive hyperbole" ?

With "translated" they mean he translated into English what he saw on gold plates ?

"A contrasting set of associations begins with the extravagant storiesof the founder of Mormonism, Joseph Smith. Smith
claimed that an angel directed him to gold plates, which he translated as the Book of Mormon."
