extract ~ excerpt

When it comes to music, literature, quoting, is there a difference? I'm seeing 'extract' more often than 'excerpt' these days [but maybe it's because I'm seeing the same post in more than one site on the internet].

(I posted this a few minutes ago in the wrong place. It has been deleted from there and now appears here. Seems a moderator should know better!

Hi Philip, I share your impression. I think it's a fad. When I hear "extract" I think of vanilla, or perfume, or rattlesnake venom, or the opposite of a dental implant.
