Extra time earned from the reduction in travel time on the road: is it a correct phrase

I wrote the following sentence but I am not sure if the underlined phrase is correct or not.
Automobiles have both positive and negative impacts on society. The amount of time spent travelling on the road has been reduced by the use of automobiles. How do drivers spend that extra hour earned from the reduction (or the decrease) in travel time on the road?
Could you help me complete the sentence correctly? Thanks.
