extend/stretch from...to...

Hello,
Do both verbs work in: "At the height of its power, The Roman Empire was vast, stretching/extending from the deserts of Africa to the borders of Northern England "?
Stretch probably sounds better, but can we also use "extend"?

Of the two, 'extending' (thinking of a telescope) is a positive verb; whereas 'stretching' (like their rations) would be less of a positive. Instead, I would favour 'spreading', 'extending', 'reaching' or even 'encompassing'.
