Extend

Hi,

Can I use 'extend' instead of 'expand' here? Is there any difference between them if yes?

"The university is in need of funds to expand the library."

Thanks.

I don't think it works here. I think of extend as linear, and expand as volumetric. We extend the deadline, the highway, the pocket ruler, the extension ladder.
