Expressions and idoms

What is the difference between expressions and idioms? Are they both same? Can anyone give me few examples of both... Thanks

Top answer

An idiom is an expression whose parts do not mean the same as the whole. 'Expression' is a very vague term that could mean almost any kind of collocated group of words.

She's the cat's meow.

There is no cat and there is no meow in the meaning of the idiom 'the cat's meow'.
