Expression: "Please write dark."

Hi

Can a teacher say the following sentences to his students using pencils?
Please write dark.

Please write light.

Please write big.

Please write small.

Many thanks in advance,

" The dictionary says small can be an adverb, so "please write small" should be fine. I've certainly heard it enough. However, although I've also been told to "write big" many a time, Webster's doesn't list it as an adverb for this context; "write large" would be better, I think.

  • " Hmmm.
  • "Darkly" is the adverb form, but doesn't mean the same thing as "heavily," which is what you want.

Please write light should definitely be "please write lightly." "Please make any notes lightly in pencil; these scores will have to be erased clean before we send them back."
