Expression or saying with 'shovel'

I remember hearing an expression with the words 'stick' and 'shovel' in it, but I've never heard it again and don't know what it really means. I'd also like to know if it's a common expression. Thanks!!

[/nq] I think I've heard my great aunt use the saying "like shoveling with a stick" for something that will take a long time or that's too difficult to do.

Was it something like "...as excrement adheres to a digging implement" ?

There's "it sticks like *** to a shovel", which is contradicted by "it goes like *** off a shovel";
