Expression about "Hope"

Hi there,

How can I express a hope against not getting cancer. Let's say I am seeing an oncologist about the result for cancer screening test. And of course, I hope that I don't have cancer and am told by the oncologist that I don't have cancer. I am relieved after hearing that, so I say: "I was hoping I won't have cancer either." Is this the right way of saying this? Or " I hope it wasn't cancer", I am very confused about tenses in English, I would appreciate any suggestions! Thanks!
