I read a sign in the supermarket it said " express 12 items or less "

what does that mean ?

"express" is the designation of that checkout (i.e. it is supposed to be a quick service for people with only a small amount to buy).

"12 items or less" means that you can't use that checkout if you are buying more than 12 items.

In the UK, signs such as these have been a point of argument, with fussy customers complaining that they should read "12 items or fewer". I think
