Hi, all! I have just found a new word in my textbook - 'expose' so I immediately looked it up in my dictionary (I use the Macmillan English Dictionary). I got the meaning of the word but, gosh, there are five definitions of this word!

The second definition is: to fail to protect someone or something from somehing harmful or dangerous

Examples:

Many of the soldiers had been exposed to radiation.

Why do we still sunbathe when we know the dangers of exposing our skin to the sun?

The sale exposed the compani to widespread criticism.

Now here is the problem: I understand none of these example, I mean, I do understand the meaning of the whole sentence, but i don't really get the meaning of 'expose'.

My question: Could someone explain this definition in a simpler way and give simpler examples?

My second question: the five definition ot the word is: "to allow light to reach the film in a camera so that you can take a photograph"

Can someone please give an example of the five definition?

During a series of nuclear tests, a company of soldiers was ordered to be in the vicinity of the tests in order to provide security. The soldiers wore their regular cloth combat uniforms, not radiation suits. The soldiers were not told to take any special precautions and were not given any training in nuclear warfare.

A month later most of the soldiers came down with radiation burns and radiation sickness. They had been exposed to radiation from the tests. That is, due to the lack of protective gear and special nuclear training they had unknowingly absorbed dangerous levels of radioactivity from the test. They had failed to take the necessary precautions that would have protected them from the effects of radiation.

Today people are well aware of the dangers of too much sunlight. Nevertheless people still go to the beach and sit out in the sun too long. Despite the known danger they expose themselves to too much sun. That is, they fail to protect themselves - for example, with large beach umbrellas - from the rays of the sun.

Companies know that public relations are important. Nevertheless some companies, for the sake of profit, do things that look bad in the eyes of the public, exposing themselves to criticism. That is, they fail to take into consideration how their actions will look to outsiders: they fail to protect themselves from bad public relations.

The shutter on a camera, when closed, protects the photographic film from all light. When you press the shutter to take a picture, the shutter opens very briefly, allowing light to fall onto the film, which, when developed, produces a photograph. Thus, pressing the shutter on a camera briefly exposes the highly light-sensitive film to light; that is, you briefly take away the protection that the closed shutter provides for the film.

Expose = to take off protection.

When you open the shutter of a camera, you expose the film. (The light from outside gets to the film.)
If you expose your skin to the sun too long, you can get a bad sunburn.

Sunburn

If you open a wine bottle and expose the wine to air, it can turn to vinegar.

If you crack open a rock, you can expose fossils hidden inside.

Trilobite fossil exposed

Bob had been seeing a girlfriend for a long time, and his wife never suspected anything.
His wife's sister saw Bob having a romantic dinner with his girlfriend, and kissing her passionately. His infidelity was exposed.
