Explode Credibility

A possible incorrectness on some website:

"In September 2009, the Guardian exploded the credibility of the lone rogue reporter defence with a series of new hacking allegations."

Is "explode the credibility of" a old British English usage or regional usage?

It just seems to me like a normal figurative use of language. Nothing unusual.
