Explanatory paper?

Hello. There is a kind of scholarly paper in Japanese that introduces and explains a topic. Which one sounds better to call it? Explanatory paper? Explanation paper? I have found that "explanatory" may already be used in English. . .

Thank you!

I don't see why that couldn't be called an essay.

It might also be a "white paper", for which the Japanese is
1. ??
2. ??

See this link on "white paper" to see if that's what you mean.

Thank you for the reply. Usually, Japanese authors explain about a complex subject in a simple manner so that researchers and students who are not familiar with the subject may understand it. It seems different from the white paper in that it is aimed at students and researchers.

Thank you again.

I guess that is "research paper" or "research report".

'explain a subject', not 'explain about a subject'.
