Explanation required for Grammar question

She forgot buying a birthday present for her husband,

A B

so his feelings were hurt.

C D

(A) buying

(B) for

(C) so

(D) were

I would like to know the explanation for answer C. I know that Gerunds are used for the event that happened in the past and Infinitives are used for the event that will happen in future.

But It looks to me that So can be used for this sentence.

I will really appreciate your help.

Thanks
