Hi

To my ear, "Good Day" is more often used when leaving someone. It means "I hope the rest of your day will be good". In fact, it is quite close to the US: "Have a nice day!"

"Good Afternoon" is more often used when greeting someone

You're correct, Dave, but Good afternoon can be both a greeting and a departing salutation.

However, I think that most Australians might take exception to your observation about Good Day (or, as they say G'day).
