Explain to mee why this is the correct version of the sentence.

9. She is very intelligent. She (can not have thought/ couldn't have thought) that!
can not have thought

The first sentence is in present time that is why it is better to use present perfect in the sentence that follows.

But I do understand the confusion 'cos it kinda like sounds okay to use "couldn't" meaning "shouldn't".

Are you guys sure? What's the point in having a test make me believe the second option is wrong when it's not?!
