Explain this in easier words?

What exactly is this assignment asking? Can someone summarize the following in easier words?

Assignment Instructions:
This essay topic requires students to use their critical reading and writing skills. Read and prepare a critical summary of ONE of the essays from our reading list. Your thesis will focus on the effectiveness (or ineffectiveness) of the essay you have chosen. The following are some questions you might want to consider when crafting your essay. What is your chosen essay’s thesis? How does the writer provide evidence for his or her argument? What tone does the writer set and for what reason or effect? What background information or cultural context does the author rely on? What specific writing strategies does the author use to convey his or her meaning?

For this assignment, you may choose to take issue with the argument put forward in your chosen essay. However, your essay must evaluate, paraphrase, summarize and quote the arguments of the other essay even as you take issue with its central premise in your own. Your essay should focus on a particular aspect of the author’s writing style, such as the use of analogies or images to make a point or rhetorical patterns employed to make an argument, and not on your own opinion about the issue discussed in the essay. It is perfectly acceptable for me to finish reading your essay and not be able to determine your opinion of the issue discussed in the essay. It is unacceptable for me to finish reading your essay with no sense of how you evaluate the effectiveness and quality of writing in the essay under discussion.

Your essay should contain at least one paragraph that summarizes the central argument of your chosen essay. This paragraph should normally be your opening introductory paragraph. Remember the strategies discussed in They Say, I Say. You are also required to provide quotations from the essay that will serve to reinforce your thesis. We will do a lesson in the upcoming weeks about how to quote sources properly. Read Chapter 8 of Steps to Writing Well. The chapter provides a series of effective tips for critical reading.
