explain that to me with events

Hello everybody,

I would like to ask someone to explain to me passive voice.

The door has been opened (present perfect)
The door has been being opened (present perfect continuous)
The door is opened (simple present )
The door is being opened (present continuous)

I know how to make sentences in passive voice but I don't know in which time to say or write them when I see what.

Thanks

Hello Alia It is a bit tough to explain 'passive voice' using the verb 'open'. First of all you have to know the verb 'open' can mean only an instantaneous action of opening something. So we can say like "The door was opened by the children when their father came back home", when we talk about a past instantaneous action.

  • But we wouldn't say the simple present form "The door is opened" by itself, though we might say like "I'll enter the room as soon as the door is opened (by someone)".
  • Likewise we rarely say "The door has been opened" by itself, though we might say like "The door has been opened only once in the past ten years" when we talk about a door to some secret room.

Hello Alia

"The food has been being eaten" is also of rare use. A sentence like "Yesterday Tom went to his cornfield and found the crops had been being eaten by insects" might be possible.
As for the second one, you might complain about your teacher's lectures saying "His instructions have been being changed".

Yes you are right. I too thought (after I put the message) we would use "change" as an intransitive verb in that case. I'm sorry for this. So I would rewrite it as "His instructions have been being changed by the school principal".

"Jay is now reading the book" --> passivize --> "The book is now being read by Jay"

You can do this way as an exercise about how to make a passive sentence. But strictly speaking, "The book is now being read by Jay" sounds weird to native speaker's ears. In English, passivization is possible only when something happens with the state of the subject in the passive sentence by the ev
