Explain joke, please

Enlightenment request.
Today's "Pearls Before Swine" comic strip revolves around "Go Team" being spelled out on camera as "Go Mate". It's obviously a bit of a Janet Jackson moment ("Sir, we've got the F.C.C. on line one").

"Go Mate" means nothing to me, and must be a US-specific reference. (Is "Mate" a brand of condom, perhaps?)
