"A specialist in Vietnamese literature," also implies that he is very good at it, but "specialist" is referring particularly to the fact that Vietnamese literature is a relatively obscure thing to study (for someone who is not Vietnamese, anyway). The man is not just studying the humanities, or just studying literature, or just studying Asian literature: he's studying Vietnamese literature.
