experiment with measuring tape

I would like to write down an experiment. Can you help me use the right words.

A How far can you roll out a retractable measuring tape before it breaks. You hold the plastic casing roll it out and see how far it can roll out before the tape snaps.

B I'm not trying to say break but when it's no longer horizontal and there is a break in it.
