"A lot of money is needed not only for things but for experiences as well - summer camp for the kids, a vacation for family, lessons in music or athletics, and most expensive of all, ~~this~~ these days, a college eduacation."

'These days' is an expression that means roughly 'at the current time'.
eg Mary is working in a store these days.

Thus, the meaning of the last part of your sentence is that 'a college education is the most expensive experience at the current time'.
