Hello,We've been talking about the difference between these two some time ago during the class, but I don't think I grasp the difference.I checked these terms in my dictionaries, but it didn't help much.If I were to explain it in simple words, I would be lost.Can you please tell me whethere they can be both used in this sentence?"With placebos, the mere __________ that treatment will help brings a diminution of symptoms."Thank you

It's a bit hard for me to explain; it just sounds right.

I thinkexpectancy is more a description of a state of mind and expectation is more a description of the act of expecting something, so that's why it's more appropriate in this sentence.
