Expectation / Expectations

Hello,

I have come across this sentence in an academic text:

"With high expectation of the nascent Communist regime, he took his family......from the US to China in 1949."

Should it be 'expectation' or 'expectations' here? What I usually see is 'expectations' when the word is used in this sense, as in "parents often have unrealistic expectations of their children."

Thank you.
