Expectancy vs. Expectation

Expectancy
Expectation

In one meaning, these two nouns bear the same meaning for me, when perceiving the difference. Would anyone be so kind as to explain me further the difference and perhaps to give me some exemplary sentences?

Thank you in advance.

I see "expectancy" as more abstract, more about the suspense and yearning involved in expecting. "Expectation" is the plain noun for "expect" where "expecting" is not so good. The two words are roughly synonymous, though, in those senses, and I would say that "expectation" is more frequent.

  • There are special uses for each word, too.
  • An air of expectancy hung over the stadium as the crowd awaited the starting gun.
