expect vs hope

1/ I can't distinguish the difference in emnaing between hope and expect. Please help me.

2/ Why can't I say I expect you will have a good party. ?

3/ What is the difference between:

a/ We weren't expecting it to rain.

b/ We weren't hoping it to rain.

You can say I expect you will have a good party, but it doesn't mean the same as "I hope...". "I expect" means "I amagine", "I should think".

We weren't expecting it to rain = we didn't think it would rain.
We weren't hoping for rain, or we didn't hope it would rain = we didn't want it to rain.

Consider a simple example.

I expect that he will die. I think it is likely.

I hope that he will die. I hate him.
