According to the link http://www.englishpage.com/verbpage/types.html, I think "expect" is an activity I cannot see somebody doing. Is there any simple ways to distinguish non-continuous verbs and normal verbs?

No. All you can do is imitate the usage of native speakers. Even the grammar books list verbs as non-continuous which native speakers occasionally use as normal verbs. Many of the books and grammar links give guidelines that are so basic that they are useless. Note, for
