Expand or expand out

Hi,

Would you ever use ‘expand out’ instead of ‘expand’?

For instance:

“We need to expand (out) 5(3x + 4x^2).”

“I limited my search to the local area. If I wanted to expand it (out), it’d take me longer to finish.”

Thank you.

” "Out" is wrong because the word in algebra for doing that is "expand". Ann225 “I limited my search to the local area. ” "Out" is not so much wrong as redundant.

  • ” "Out" is wrong because the word in algebra for doing that is "expand".
  • Ann225 “I limited my search to the local area.
  • ” "Out" is not so much wrong as redundant.
  • You expand your search, never expand it out, but in your sentence, the wording is such that "out" becomes possible, if no more felicitous.
