e.g.: Originating in or characteristic of a distant foreign country.

I've got this from the Oxford Dictionary.

The words strange, exotic, alien, and foreign are all similar in meaning in certain contexts.

As I understand them, 'exotic' emphasizes strangeness or oddity; 'alien' emphasizes unfamiliarity or foreignness.

Exotic is from the Greek exo (outside). It generally has a combined connotation of foreign and attractive.

Alien is from the Latin Alius (other) and has a connotation of different or not belonging to this place.
